Direction Reaction Creation (5CD Box Set) 1997

The legacy of the Jam is founded on just half-a-dozen studio albums–all crammed into an incident-packed five years. Yet their impact was much, much more significant than a mere six albums would suggest. The trio’s intensity was born of punk but, uniquely at the time, the Jam were willing, quite literally, to wear their musical influences on their sleeves–the Who, Tamla Motown, James Brown, the Kinks, soul, the Beatles, etc. This was heady stuff for the revisionist Year Zero that was punk.

The Jam hammered out of 1977 with punk singles like “In The City” and “The Modern World”; but soon Paul Weller was finding his own voice as a writer, with songs like “Down In The Tube Station At Midnight”, “Saturday’s Kids”, “The Eton Rifles” and “Town Called Malice”–songs which reflected the suburbia that bred him and put Weller in line with Pete Townshend and Ray Davies as an observer par-excellence of the English scene. And like them, Weller was also capable of knocking out striking pop singles like “Going Underground”, “Start!” and “Beat Surrender”.
Direction Reaction Creation is a welcome 5CD box which gathers together pretty much everything the Jam ever recorded: B-sides and hard-to-get singles as well as every track from those six albums. The package also includes a strikingly designed and well-written 88-page book commemorating every release and every gig the Jam played. But the fifth disc is the real bonus: 22 unreleased tracks, including demos (“In The City”, “Precious”, “The Bitterest Pill”); covers (“Rain”, “Dead End Street”, “Stand By Me”); and alternate takes (“A Solid Bond In Your Heart”, “Billy Hunt”, “That’s Entertainment”).
The music here is a fine reflection of those frantic times a quarter of a century ago, and you can only marvel at the quality, and the quantity, of material the Jam produced–they were gigging constantly, yet still managed to churn out a string of singles and albums that lived up to Weller’s high standards. Albums like Setting Sons and Sound Affects saw the Jam really coming to the boil, but sadly–with Weller’s interest taking him off into folk, jazz and R&B–the band’s days were already numbered. Direction Reaction Creation is, however, a fine souvenir–and one that offers positive proof that, after the Sex Pistols and Clash, the Jam were the most original band to be thrown up by the New Wave

MYTY KONKEROR

MYTY KONKEROR takes a meditative approach to rock. A noisy three-piece from New Haven, CT and Brooklyn, NY, their sonic explorations incorporate fragments of proto-metal, shoegaze, kraut-rock, and noise, melding into what some have described as hypnotic scrap-metal.
Their sound came together while Kiefer and Steubs logged countless miles along the I-95 corridor to meet for rehearsal and writing sessions in an old Milford, CT auto body shop.  Steubs came armed with his flying V and hypnotic riffs while Kiefer banged out beats in service to his grooves. Together they fleshed out the basic structures before expanding the songs with layered guitar loops that allowed Steubs to jam free over a repetitive polyrhythmic stew.
After recording their debut EP, The Excluded Middle, in their home studio in North Branford, CT, both members decided that loop pedals alone were not enough to help them achieve the sound they sought. So they brought lapsteel player Jon Schlesinger into the fold.  Jon provided them with the colors missing from their sonic palette, filling in the spaces with blissed-out harmolodics.  With his addition, the MK sound coalesced, and heads at local and regional shows began turning.
Since their debut release, MYTY KONKEROR have been playing shows with local and regional artists while recording and producing their first full-length album, I miss the future.  These songs are looser and more expansive than their previous efforts, yet their distinct dissonance and hypnotic hooks remain.

Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi Present – Rome – Starring Jack White & Norah Jones VO

Posted by pepearljam on 26 May, 2011
Posted in: Uncategorized. Tagged: Danger Mouse Daniele Luppi. Leave a comment

In a digital age where music is produced, consumed and discarded in the blink of an eye, Rome is brilliant anachronism: a defiantly analogue album that took five years to perfect and has been made to pass the test of time…
Brian Burton and Daniele Luppi met in Los Angeles in 2004. Burton, better known as Danger Mouse, had just created a media storm with The Grey Album, begun work on Gorillaz Demon Days opus and was also embarking on his hugely successful Gnarls Barkley project with Cee-Lo Green. Luppi, a composer from Italy, was receiving acclaim for his album An Italian Story, which revisited the cinematic sounds of his childhood. (He has also written music for the screen – Sex and the City, Nine – and later worked with Burton on arrangements for Gnarls Barkley, Dark Night Of The Soul and Broken Bells.)
United by their shared passion for classic Italian film music, they decided to create something special. After an intense songwriting period – writing separately at first, and then together as the songs evolved – they travelled to Rome in October 2006. Luppi made some calls and they assembled the original musicians from films such as The Good, the Bad and the Ugly andOnce Upon a Time in the West – including the legendary Marc 4 backing band and Alessandro Alessandroni’s ‘I Cantori Moderni’ choir. Most of the musicians were in their seventies and hadn’t worked together for several decades.
They booked time in Rome’s cavernous Forum Studios – formerly Ortophonic Studios, founded by the great Ennio Morricone. Burton and Luppi scoured the city for vintage equipment, using bottles of wine as payment. Every effort was made to replicate the recording practices of the 1960s/70s golden age, recording live and straight to tape, with overdubs but no electronics, computers, 21st-century effects or studio trickery.
“The studio was a beautiful thing” says Luppi. “It sits underneath a neo-classical church and is carved out of an ancient catacomb. The space is huge. It has an echo chamber and a room full of vintage tapes. The vibe is really inspiring.”
Return journeys were made to record the choir and full orchestra. “I’m so happy with how it’s turned out, but it’s been a real labour of lov,” says Burton, who funded the whole project himself, “It’s taken up a lot of time and effort, not to mention the cost, but it’s because it had to be a certain way.” And that, ultimately, reflects what this album is built on: perfectionism, patience, being ambitious and two people who were prepared to go to great lengths to ensure the end result is exactly at it should be.
The next step was finding two lead vocalists who could do justice to the songs – three of which been written for a man and three for a woman. While on tour with Gnarls Barkley, Burton met Jack White of the White Stripes:“I played him some of the tracks, not even thinking I’d be able to get him on it.” A year later, White recorded his contributions – The Rose With The Broken Neck, Two Against One and The World – in Nashville. “We thought it would be really interesting to combine his voice, which is very rock n’ roll, with this polished and elegant music,” says Luppi. “He nailed it perfectly.”
White’s counterpart, in a revelatory turn, is Norah Jones, who flew to Burton’s LA studio from New York to sing on Season’s Trees, Black andProblem Queen. “I really love the way her voice sounds,” says Burton. “I knew this was a little bit different for her, but she was really up for it.”
Subsequently, acclaimed director and photographer Chris Milk was enlisted as ‘Visual Director’, and finally, after half a decade of hard work and unstinting perfectionism, the album was mixed. It opens with soprano Edda Dell’Orso’s dramatic voice (used to haunting effect on The Good, the Bad and the Ugly 44 years ago) gracing Theme of Rome. For all its cinematic qualities, what follows is not the soundtrack to an imaginary movie, or a homage to the great Italian film composers but a complex, nuanced pop record with intensity and darkness as well as uplift and light. (Luppi calls it “a small window on human life, touching on love, death, happiness, desperation, and the visceral connection of a man and a woman”.) It’s an ambitious work with a uniquely modern sound that has been achieved through traditional, vintage processes. It is, above all, a fully realised album, perfectly formed and hauntingly beautiful.
Welcome to Rome.

DISAPPEARS

DISAPPEARS

Saludos…

BLACK LIPS

Posted by pepearljam on 23 May, 2011
Posted in: Uncategorized. Tagged: BLACK LIPS. 1 Comment

What do you do when your sixteen and in deep shit? You’re looking out at the world from the strip-mall and the detention hall, from the basement and the cul-de-sac and it just looks like there is a wall around you. Everybody tells you and your friends that you’re going nowhere, that your lives are already ruined. What the fuck do you do?

You hang around and smash stuff and get high and try to be a bad-ass, that’s what you do. You steal and drink and smash up the car your mom gave you and pull your pee-pee out in public. You work at sandwich shops and fast-food joints and try to screw private school girls because they think your tough and the girls at your school think your gay because you pretended to give your friend a blowjob at the junior prom. You fuck it all up as ugly and as dirty as you can because, why the fuck not?

Your parents and teachers and sandwich-shop supervisors look at you and think, “What happened to the kid? He has all the advantages in the world and he has chucked it all in the shitter. Doesn’t he believe in the inherent goodness of our enlightened society? Doesn’t he believe in any thing at all?”

It is this question, the question of belief, nay, the question of faith, that is the crux of the matter. It is this question that was asked of the Black Lips. And the Black Lips have answered it. They have answered it in their songs and in their actions. They have answered it for every shit-assed, burned-out brat that staggers out of the suburbs. They have answered it resoundingly and continue to answer it.

“Where is their answer?” you may ask. Do those psychedelic swamp guitar drones bear witness to a faith of some kind? Does the quasi-violent sexual comedy of their stage show underscore a deeply held belief system? Does their commingling of Deep South, big-tent revival rhetoric with hoary-throated, drug-haze mumble truly mean anything, to them or to anyone else?

You bet your ass it means something to them. How would they have persevered through all the drudgery and threats of doom if it didn’t mean a goddamn thing to them? Their adversaries have been formidable and numerous, and they have bested them all. Why, even in their earliest days, death itself reared its ugly head to attempt to halt their progress, and was dismissed directly. How, without faith, could the Black Lips have carried their message forth into the four corners of the earth?

And so, on the eve of the release of their fifth album, the faith abides stronger than ever. A host of influences have passed through their gullet and provided the sustenance to keep their faith alive. The dusts of a southern back road and the big-city gutter puke crackle in the grooves of this record as it did in the previous ones. The shouts and moans and static continue to bear witness.

“But faith in what?” the fathers, mayors and captains of industry might continue to ask. Well, if you’ve never been one of those shit-assed brats looking out into a world you were already excluded from, a world that sickened you, but for which there was no alternative, then you may not understand. But, through the eyes of one whom, like them, was a go-nowhere from the get-go, the Black Lips represent the faith that it takes to reject that world of sterile, futile, servile, silliness and forge your own world based on bravery and bad-ass-ness. They have carried to fruition the plan that has been hatched, and will continue to be hatched in the minds of dizzy, dumb and desperate youth the world over. Now they carry their message of faith to the world. FEAR NOT! BE BRAVE AND TAKE HEART! THE WORLD IS YOURS IF YOU ACCEPT THE POWER OF FAITH!!!

(As I record these words a purple and orange fog engulfs the bay below me. The gin gimlets glide down my throat and I ponder the freedom that I, myself, have wrenched from the ‘enlightened society’ that once oppressed me. It is good and right that we should live free. I know this, the Black Lips know this, and the gulls in the bay below know this. Take this knowledge and go in faith.)

‘Upside Down’ – The Creation Records Story

http://s.ytimg.com/yt/swfbin/watch_as3-vflSx_GzE.swf

Creation Records was a British independent record label headed by Alan McGee. Along with JoeFoster and Dick Green, McGee founded Creation in 1983. The label lasted until its demise in 2000. The name came from the 1960s band The Creation, whom McGee greatly admired. McGee, Green and Foster were also in the band Biff Bang Pow!, which was also the title of a The Creation song.

Early years

Creation was among the key labels in the mid-1980s Indie movement, with early artists such as The Jesus and Mary Chain and Primal Scream. The Jesus and Mary Chain went to record for Warner Brothers in 1985, yet McGee remained as their manager. With the profits he had made from the band, he was able to release singles by label acts such as Primal Scream, Felt, and The Weather Prophets.

McGee had enthusiasm and an uncanny ability to attract the weekly music media, and he was able to get a growing underground following. In their early days, he was able to project a notorious image of The Jesus And Mary Chain, which had often courted violence and loutish

behaviour.

Mid-period

Following an unsuccessful attempt to run an offshoot label for Warner Brothers, McGee regrouped Creation and immersed himself in the burgeoning dance and acid house scene starting in the late 1980s. Those scenes had influenced Creation mainstays such as Primal Scream and Ed Ball, as well as newer arrivals such as My Bloody Valentine.

While Creation Records’ releases at this time tended to be critically acclaimed, they tended not to be major commercial hits. Creation had run up considerable debt that was only held off until he sold half the company to Sony Music in 1992. There were reports of McGee’s escalating drug use, as well as numerous and conflicting reports of the label being nearly bankrupted after funding the two-year long recording of My Bloody Valentine’s 1991 Loveless LP.

Sony years

After selling to Sony, Creation had signed Oasis, whose Definitely Maybe LP became a huge critical and commercial success. The band went on to epitomize the cultural Britpop movement of the mid-90s. The success of Oasis was unprecedented for an act on an independent label. Their second album, (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? became the biggest selling British album of the decade.

In the 1990s, Creation launched the subsidiary, Rev-Ola Records, which was formed by Joe Foster. Rev-Ola is now a part of the Cherry Red group.

The revitalised Labour Party took note of McGee’s accomplishments with Creation. They got McGee to spearhead a media campaign prior to the 1997 General Election in order to appeal to Britain’s youth culture. He was largely responsible for changing government legislation in relation to musicians being able to go on the New Deal which gave musicians three years to develop and be funded by the government instead of having to take other jobs to survive.

Omnibus went on to make a documentary on McGee and Creation in 1998 for BBC One. Creation Records was awarded ‘Independent Label of the Year’ every year between 1995 and 1998 by Music Week, and McGee was awarded by the NME ‘Godlike Genius’ award in February 1995.

Dissolution

The dissolution of Creation Records in 2000 led to McGee forming Poptones. The label saw a return to the staunchly independent roots of Creation, and had most notably launched the career of The Hives in the UK.

In May 2007, McGee told The Independent newspaper that he was winding down Poptones for financial reasons

During its existence Creation’s roster featured some of the leading lights of the British alternative rock scene, including:

* Oasis

* My Bloody Valentine

* The Jesus and Mary Chain

* Primal Scream

* Super Furry Animals

* Teenage Fanclub

* Saint Etienne

* The Boo Radleys

* Slaughter Joe

The Muggs from Detroit

 The Muggs in action - photo by Michael Spleet

Burnside, Junior Kimbrough, T Model Ford, B.B.

FATHER PHOENIX

Posted by pepearljam on 20 May, 2011
