Warpaint On World Cafe

June 3, 2011

Warpaint has carved out a spot in the Los Angeles music scene with a style that playfully courts dreamlike sequences of psychedelia, post-punk and funk. The all-female quartet has been around since 2004, and after releasing its debut EP, Exquisite Corpse, in 2008, the group became a local sensation.
After jumping to No. 1 on the Amoeba Reords local artist chart, Warpaint was picked up by Manimal Vinyl, who reissued the EP. Throughout 2009, the girls were picked up to tour the states with School of Seven Bells, Band of Horses, Yeasayer, The XX and Beach Fossils.
The strengths of the EP connects directly to the band’s debut LP, The Fool. The album contains streaks of experimental funk, punk and electro-pop instrumentals glazed in a thin, hazy wash of vocals.
After charting in the U.K. and U.S., Warpaint has embarked on a slew of appearances, including music festivals Lollapalooza, Coachella and the Glastonbury Festival. Hear the band play live and discuss its current tour, talk about growing up together in Oregon, and how California has had an influence on the band’s style.

In this week’s NME…

Sound the alarms, warn your elderly relatives and lock up your sausages…
Kasabian are back and just as batshit as ever. Things have definitely been a bit quieter since Tom and Serge buggered off to California to record the new record, so you’ll be glad to know that that Mr Meighan is as crackers as ever. Apparently Cumberland sausages have got weed in them. Good to have you back, boys…

Elsewhere in the mag we get the full lo-down from The Horrors about the ‘baggy’ vibes of their upcoming new record, give the definitive verdict on Arctic Monkeys’ epic new album, ‘Suck It And See’, and finally rip those wafty bandanas off Wu Lyf’s faces and find out if they’re actually any good (they are).

As well as that, Brett Anderson takes us on a druggy journey through Suede’s history, Miles Kane bangs on about how much he loves Liam Gallagher (whodathunkit) and These New Puritans leave their watermelons at home for their biggest show since Hidden Live.

Plus reviews, the week’s essential gig guide, and loads of other stuff that will make you HAPPY.
Buy it, like.

Death Cab for Cutie 2011

Posted by pepearljam on 30 May, 2011
Posted in: Uncategorized. Tagged: Death Cab for Cutie. Leave a comment

There’s two ways to look at Death Cab for Cutie. They are simultaneously the epitome of the little indie-band-that-could– Seattle-based with jangly yet melancholic riff-ridden tunes that seeped into various layers of the pop culture strata; and they are also part of the Atlantic Records roster – a band who’s last album, Narrow Stairs, debuted at no. 1 on the Billboard 200.
Codes and Keys, their 7th album, is an embodiment of the struggle Death Cab fans face (and what a struggle it is): It’s definitely not old, familiar, sparse, early/mid ‘00s Death Cab, but that doesn’t mean it’s not Death Cab. Underneath slicker production and diminished guitar usage, are the same melodies and introspective, angsty songwriting, only this time the band may come off as occasionally happy.
In March, frontman Ben Gibbard told Rolling Stone “we’re struggling with the idea of home,” which probably accounts for tunes like “Home is a Fire” and “You are a Tourist,” both of which deal with a displacement or destruction of home (think “Grapevine Fires,” but amplified). Lines like “Plates they will shift, houses will shake, fences will drift. We will awake only to find nothing’s the same,” lend to a deliberate unease, matched by a new nervous energy that pervades the album.
During the run up to the release of Codes and Keys, much buzz centered around the quotes from the band saying that there would be far less guitar on the album than the previous six. It seemed counter-intuitive for a group who’s sound is so tied into readily identifiable guitar-riffs like those of “Title and Registration,” or more recently, the much chattered about, 9-minute “I Will Possess Your Heart.”
While die hard fans may feel the group is abandoning something crucial to their musical identity,Codes and Keys still has plenty of guitar to satisfy, and after all, 2005’s Plans was very much piano-heavy. The first few bars of “Doors Open and Unlocked” should put fears to bed.
Synth and strings do figure more prominently, but in an unobtrusive way. The ornate “St. Peter’s Cathedral” could not be without them. “Unobstructed Views” builds in a familiar way for three minutes before Gibbard comes in with “There’s no wire in the sky, just our love. No unobstructed view, no perfect truth.” Then there’s the requisite, bouncy “Portable Television,” akin to Narrow Stairs’ “You Can Do Better Than Me.” “Portable television, take us away from this burden of reflection we’ve carried today. The generator’s running but there’s nothing on the air, but static is a comfort so we huddle around and stare,” Gibbard sings.
If one last comparison can be drawn between Narrow Stairs and Codes and Keys, it’s the difference between the two ending tracks: “The Ice was Getting Thinner,” a song about a relationship gone stale, and “Stay Young Go Dancing.” Gibbard sings in the latter, “When she sings I hear a symphony and I’m swallowed in sound as it echoes through me. And oh, how I feel alive. Through winter’s advancing, we’ll stay young, go dancing.”
Amid the codes and keys, maybe what Death Cab for Cutie is trying to crack is a smile.

The Jam – Sound Affects Deluxe Edition 2010 Repost

Posted by pepearljam on 30 May, 2011
Posted in: Uncategorized. Tagged: the jam. 1 Comment
“I still feel it was our best record. There are loads of other things I like, but as an overall body work, I thought it was great. To me, it still sounds fresh.”
Paul Weller – August 2010

The Jam – Sound Effects Deluxe Edition

Released November 1, 2010

Tellingly, when Weller came to record 2010’s Wake Up The Nation, it was Sound Affects that his collaborator and producer Simon Dine held up as a model. “He referenced it right at the start,” says Weller. “That was the sort of sound he imagined we should be going for: hard, metallic, quite stripped-down… jagged.”

Sound Affects was originally released in November 1980 at a time when The Jam was considered the biggest band in Britain. The album followed the band’s first number one single – Going Underground and features the group’s second UK number one single, Start! – a track built around almost exact copies of the bass-line and guitar solos from The Beatles’ Taxman (at the time Weller considered the album a cross between Off the Wall and Revolver!).

It includes many of the band’s classic songs – That’s Entertainment (written in a caravan in Selsey, after the pub), never released as a single in UK, the German import was a UK hit (subsequently covered by Morrissey), the political Man in the Corner Shop, Pretty Green (now inspiration for Liam Gallagher’s clothing range!), the pure-pop of Boy About Town and Dream Time.

It’s regarded by critics and fans (as well as Weller) as their most adventurous and experimental collection of material, drawing musical influences from the ‘post-punk’ groups of the late-70s – Wire, Gang Of Four and Joy Division as well as neo-psychedelic touches from The Beatles and The Zombies etc.

The distinctive cover art is a pastiche of the artwork used on various BBC sound effects records of the 1970s, incorporating ‘pop-art’ imagery.

• 30th anniversary 2-disc, ‘Deluxe’ edition of the classic Jam album.

• Digitally re-mastered – 22 bonus tracks, demos, b-sides and alternative versions.

• 24-page booklet with extensive new sleevenotes by Guardian writer John Harris, a brand new interview with Paul Weller, rare photos and period memorabilia.

• The bonus material includes 8 previously unreleased tracks – demos of Pretty Green and Start!, alternate versions of Set The House Ablaze and Monday and a cover of Kinks’ Waterloo Sunset, and two instrumental demos.

STEVE CRADOCK

Posted in: Uncategorized. Tagged: Steve Cradock. Leave a comment
