Some rock bands from around the world which make  tickling on my ears

Without further ado, here’s a sample from last years  face of rock ‘n roll in South Africa.

THE PRETTY BLUE GUNS

Andre Leo, Lucas Swart, Brandon Visser, Gregory James Thompson

The Pretty Blue Guns are four best friends  who love making a noise. 
Their style has been described as “gritty blues rock”, with influences ranging from early Robert Johnson era blues and Tom Waits to modern 
rock giants such as The White Stripes or Kings Of Leon.
They have been steadily doing their thing since 2008, building up fans and respect across the country playing shows all over South Africa for 
the past few years with some of the country’s top acts, ranging from small intimate theatre shows to huge festivals  and recording their debut 
Cutting Heads. on 2009,  a reference to blues buskers in the 1920’s that would battle for tips from passers-by, playing the same traditional 
blues songs as other buskers.
Now with the release of their follow-up Shed Your Skin  show us why have been praised for their heartfelt approach to the creation of music 
and their identity as a musical force that does not follow trends, but instead stays true to its roots…

STEPDOG

Jonathan Velthuysen, Beitel van der Merwe, Jean Labuschagne

Jonathan Velthuysen was born in South Africa, raised in Stellenbosch, and schooled anywhere they’d have him. He spent most of his
childhood skirting farm roads along the rivers and the chalk lines of sports fields at school. He came to his adult senses while in the thick of
Ethnomusicalogical study on a small island called Benbecula in the Northern sea. A nurture-imbibed yearning for wildness brought him
home to the sounds of Lou Reed, Buddy Holly, Of Montreal and Sonic Youth. Stepdog is his voice of displacement, a rights to passage and
a Polaroid self-portrait.
Beitel van der Merwe left the weary suburbs of Bloemfontein to study a Law degree in Stellenbosch. He is currently finishing his degree in
between his busy schedule performing live music. He believes that music, red wine and fishing are the best things ever invented. When he’s
not writing music with his house and band mate Jonathan he continues to play music, braai and tour with his great friends from the Afrikaans
band Zinkplaat.
Jean Labuschagne grew up in the lazy farming town of Paarl, where he started playing the drums at the age of 13 out of sheer boredom. After
his mother passed away when he was 17, he left school and home and decided to move to Stellenbosch, where he met Jonathan for the first
time and the two started a band called Middelvinger. A couple of years later he moved to Cape Town to follow a career in Muay Thai, where
he trained for four years under the legendary Quinton Chong. In 2007, Jean packed his bags and returned to Stellenbosch where he
reconnected with Jonathan, and the two started to write music once more. After a grueling year of searching they finally found the right
bassist, and the trio Stepdog was finally born.
Now they´re  offering to their fans  the free download of their debut  entitled Amy After Dark. The 3-piece’d band’s 6-track EP features the top
5 hit Angie which is currently receiving extensive airplay on national radio stations.
The EP was produced and recorded by Jürgen von Wechmar　at Sunset Recording Studios and mastered by Tim Lengefeld at TL
Mastering and is  available on
http://www.stepdog.co.za from early February 2011.
Stepdog’s first single Angie was given away with the October issue of Your LMG and rapidly climbed the charts reaching number 2 on 5fm’s
SA Rock Chart.

THE REVELATORS

Daniel Ackerman, Heino Retief, Johnny Tex

The Revelators is a three-piece garage rock band from Cape Town, South Africa.
The band may seem a little out of place in the South African music scene. They create a low-fi style of garage fuzz that communicates their
love for simplicity in music – with songwriting that gives way to a raw, energetic delivery  drawing  their influence from the gritty soul of Delta
Blues, 60s garage/psych, as well as roots punk.
They play stripped-down garage-punk that sits in glaring contrast to the technical frivolities of their more synth-driven contemporaries.
Comprising Johnny Tex on vocals and guitar, Heino Retief on bass, and Daniel Ackerman on drums, the band peddles the raw energy.
 In May 2010, The Revelators released their debut album  independently , We’ll Make Them Like New, recorded in analogue to capture a
vintage feel, while staying as true to their  live sound as possible.and was rapidly earning fans throughout the Mother City
The first 1000 album covers were hand stamped by the band.

Now they  re-recorded their only  album live in a warehouse on a shitty tape old tape machine and   shared  it free
After that lead singer Johnny Tex announced  this year’s   to be  doing their last gig, likely not  there’ll be more from them.
Swear i´m so sorry.  I think  them have   international quality. It´s a  prime example of what  happen to the bands if they’re not given enough
support.
Bottom line ,  as the viewer and listener,  we must keep  music alive…

THE FUTURE PRIMITIVES

Itroducing the  new South African garage rock beast  based on two-thirds from  The Revelators   with The Future Primitives ,  the new project of Johnny  and Heino,  this time beside Warren Fisher on drums, and those have been so kind as to release for free  their EP/demo This Here’s The Future Primitives and a few daya ago an album of covers , Songs We Taught Ourselves,  which is available on two vinyl versions through Groovie Records,   real lo-fi  portrayed  in its purest form to stand up to the  best from South African  garage rock  .

If you get the chance to see The Future Primitives live, do it. Their music is mix of garage rock, 60’s rock and roll and surf rock elements that is delivered in a raw  rock fashion  just too awesome.
