THE MALADIES – GIVE ME SOMETHING
released 01 July 2010
Recorded and Produced by The Maladies in Hailey and Stanley, ID
Mixed by Sylvia Massy and Wade Steigmeyer at Radiostar Studios in Weed, CA
Mastered by Tom Baker at Precision Mastering in Los Angeles, CA
All Songs Written/Published by Erik Gillberg (BMI)
Lyric and guitar driven album rock with modern influences and vintage sounds. Influenced by Queens Of The Stone Age and The Clash. The Maladies played the Give Me Something songs live on tour in the American Pacific Northwest before recording them at Morningstar Studios, The Ranch Studio, and River Trail Studios in Idaho during 2007 and 2008, working out the kinks and learning what felt good to play. The band was listening to Queens Of The Stone Age, Kings Of Leon, White Stripes, Outkast, Black Keys, Arctic Monkeys and seeking out anything else that felt real and musical. The lyrics aim to express illness, in the sense of exorcising it. The music emerged from the lyrics and was then expanded by the band and the chemistry that developed while recording their self-titled debut, The Maladies.
Unlike the first album which was mixed by the band in Pro Tools, Give Me Something was mixed using vintage analog gear at Radiostar Studios in Weed, California. The hope was to retain more of the authenticity and depth of the music as it sounded when played live.

The White Soots are a blues/rock trio from Dayton, OH. The band formed in early 2009 with brothers Kyle(Guitar/Vocals) and Kraig Byrum(Drums) and longtime friend Karl Benge(Bass) and began playing in clubs in Dayton under the name Fuzz Hound, which was changed to The White Soots after about 1 year of playing. They specialize in a bluesy, psychedelic mix of guitar infused rock and roll.
———————————————–

You have questions about Obits. This is understandable. They’re an intriguing band. For starters, you ask, “Are Obits ‘indie rock veterans’?” The answer is: yes and no. Yes, they are accomplished musicians who once fronted Drive Like Jehu, Edsel, Hot Snakes, and Pitchfork. But also; No, they are not active or retired members of the United States military. They are not veterans in that sense. It’s good to get these things sorted out. Don’t worry—there are no dumb questions.
Are Obits a young band? They are. Another good question. A child born in 2007, when Greg Simpson joined as bassist, would not yet be in kindergarten. Obits didn’t self-release their first single (“One Cross Apiece” b/w “Put It in Writing”) until late 2008. Their debut LP (I Blame You, on Sub Pop), wasn’t released until March 2009.
Is it true fans bootlegged Obits’ very first show? It is very much true. Does their stripped-down rock incorporate elements of surf and garage? Absolutely it does. The members of Obits are fans of oldies. They generally dislike newies. But their influences simmer in the crock-pot of human creativity; you will find only disappointment if you try to deduce the muse of any given song.
What, you ask, of Obits’ new record? Well, for starters, it’s their second full-length, and it’s called Moody, Standard andPoor. It was recorded at Brooklyn’s Saltlands Studio by Eli Janney and Geoff Sanoff. Sub Pop will release it on March 29, 2011. This concerns you. Isn’t that Vangelis’s birthday? To be perfectly honest, it is. This was a scheduling snafu, plain and simple. There’s nothing to be done about it now.
Will this be a “yelly” record? No, it will not. Rick Froberg doesn’t yell any more. It makes him uncomfortable. Hurts his throat. He’s not going to do it. Unless he sees a fire in the engineer’s booth, or a crazy man with a knife hiding behind one of the amps. And even then, it’s doubtful that Rick’s yelling would make it onto tape.
Is there a tradeoff for Rick not yelling? Absolutely. Obits’ music is more stripped down than any of Froberg’s previous bands. As chief songwriter, he spares the overdubs and spoils the open chords. Sonically, it’s an intimate sound, borderline chummy. It’s like you’re hanging out with them at practice. Only you’re not actually, physically, hanging out with them at practice, so you won’t be made to feel rude.
So how will Moody, Standard and Poor make you feel? The short answer is: great. Not Smoking-An-Eightball-Of-Coke great. But Alive-To-New-Listening-Experiences great. This intrigues you. I can see it on your face. You’re thinking, “What about the long answer?”
The long answer is that these twelve songs will take you on a series of emotional road trips. Some will be as brief as a walk to the fridge. Others will be epic pilgrimages to the shady hinterlands of your subconscious. Great records can do this. Moody, Standard and Poor is no exception.
You ask for elaboration, which seems fair. I can tell you that the fuzzy under-drone of “Shift Operator”—one of two songs sung by guitarist Sohrab Habibion—will evoke the joy of driving to grab a taco very late at night, after a storm, finding the wet city roads entirely yours. The bendy twang of “New August” will recall a fiery dusk, long forgotten, when you sat in a different car and came to terms with a difficult romantic or professional setback. The spooky resonance of “I Blame Myself” will remind you of a time when you were alone, and lonely, and trapped in an abandoned zinc mine. Don’t be scared of these emotions. The park rangers eventually rescued you, remember? Everything worked out.
What, you ask, of their songwriting chops? Here I need to stop you. Remember how I said there were no dumb questions? It turns out I was wrong. This one actually is a dumb question. Obits are a group of accomplished indie-rock veterans, not a cut of pork. Please do not use the word “chop” in this context again.
It’s a special on Reading and Leeds 2011, as we announce the headliners, and the first wave of confirmed other acts. As you may have gathered from the cover, Muse are topping the bill, and we’ve got an exclusive interview with them, and the other top bands including Beady Eye and My Chemical Romance, ahead of what looks set to be an absolute peach of a festival.
Also in the issue, we speak to The Kills, as they prepare to release their new album. It’s not all about tabloid infamy with them, y’know…
We’ve also got an amazing story on Glasvegas, as we hit the road with them in Europe and get some startling confessions from James Allen regarding his much discussed OD last year…
Meanwhile Cage the Elephant tell us about how they suddenly transformed themselves into one of the best, and loudest, bands around, and Patrick Wolf tells us how he’s transformed himself into one of the best, and softest, singers around…
Plus, there’s the usual album and live reviews, your essential gig guide, and Duff McKagan talking about something called ‘road gay’.
Be a good egg and buy it, will you?

It is with extreme pride that Third Man Records announces its First Quarter Vault package for the year 2011.
As we dictated last year, each year will begin with a double-LP compilation of the previous year’s singles. And we really did it up in 2010: the first-ever release by Karen Elson, more Dead Weather mayhem, Conan O’Brien’s madness, Pujol, Laura Marling, Secret Sisters (man, let’s take a breath here),the Greenhornes, Drakkar Sauna, Thornbills AND Wanda Jackson! Show us a better year of singles and we’ll show you some magic beans. And don’t forget the snazzy poster of the covers of ALL those records, to put right next to your 2009 singles poster. Let’s make this a tradition.
Our 7″ for this package is a sick pairing of two classics by the 5.6.7.8’s. These two songs were recorded late in the night at third man studio. The gals asked jack to play guitar with them, after jack asked if they could play one of his favorite songs of theirs ‘I walk like jane mansfield” the gals then shot into these other two songs off the cuff. A little bit of Jerry Lee Lewis’ “Great Balls of Fire” and “Hanky Panky” as made famous by Tommy James and the Shondells? Are we out of our minds? this 7″ is a cool companion piece to the upcoming 5.6.7.8’s Blue Series and live LP coming in February.
We’re sparing no expense for our third item in this package. As a tribute to two folks near and dear to our hearts who passed away this past year, don van vliet and sub pop vice president of sales and marketing Andy Kotowicz. We are ecstatic to announce the reissue of the White Stripes 7″ covering Captain Beefheart, originally released as part of the Sub Pop Singles Club in 2001. Finally available again, these three songs (“Party of Special Things to Do”, “China Pig” and “Ashtray Heart”) are sickly paired with new artwork. If that’s not enough, (and really, for you, it should be) we are also making this the first (and quite possibly last?) Tri-Color component of a Vault package. There will be no black vinyl pressing of this single and it will not be made available outside of the package. This will also be the first White Stripes Tri-Color, substituting the standard yellow sliver of our Third Man releases with the inimitable red that we’ve all known and loved for years. Many thanks to the kind folks at Sub Pop for helping make such a cool thing happen and if all goes right, be sure to buy the downloads of these songs from them when they make them available, say… below, enjoy …
