Another month, and a bunch of missed posts on the road during all this time. This is one of those times where I search a good excuse, though…yes, I’m dead fucking exhausted for the move to our new house but I’m not for posting now . Not sure how I manage to swing between the move/office/hospital/ my children’s school, but it feels fucking awesome. But yeah, that’s my excuse for not posting … but Oh yeah, I’ve got some music for you, too.
Maybe you heard about Jimmy Lindsey Jr.AKA Jay Reatard, an essential musician that has become on one of my favorite , no one in their right mind would dare dispute Jay’s roles like a genious, as awesome as their first solo album is, is almost all his stuff.
“Blood Visions”, was released in 2006 and was instantly a favorite of garage rock critics and jaded punkers alike. I bought this album thinking it was punk. The Jay’s earlier efforts had been bandied about in those circles, and I expected something more akin to the Black Flag or The Saints I was enjoying from this genre. Now, I state emphatically, with my head pounding on the amplifier that Jimmy Lindsey Jr should be hailed as one of America’s greatest songwriters. By now we all know how Jay struggled in life, we know about the demons that rode his heels right to an early grave in 2010, perhaps without his environment falling in, and I am tired and don’t want to write about it, but the darkness he carried permeates Jay’s work from stem to stern, and always makes me wonder if he was brilliant because he suffered or if he suffered because he was brilliant. It hardly matters now, what does matter is the beautiful and poignant music and lyrics he left behind, and it still moves me. If you are unversed in this important, and oft-overlooked American icon, start here and dig through Jay Reatard’s stellar discography. Maybe , see you in hell Jay…
