Where in May past, Celina Ozymandias has disbursed between records that comes to my mail box a fantastic garage rock colection from Glasgow to allow that I can knowing to Los Tentakills, then I got the good fortune to meet to Celina´s husband and partner , Al Hotchkiss , he was doing lots of solo works, and plays guitar in the band .
There, I could know about the secret of two people who know each other well enough to push a bit harder, without worries about ruffling others feathers and trying something different, difficult, intuitive, trusting. Something marvelous.
Through this blog I got the good fortune to meet a lot of garage-psych names , and if there is only one musician I could add to that a list it’d undoubtedly be
Al Hotchkiss , who is like rather belt out garage-psych rock.
I found a handful of records from him while playing guitar solo and beside his troupe known as Jazz-Pill.
HIs love for psychedelia both vocally and guitar garage ,as well as his lot of musical influences under his belt seem to make it almost too easy for his own creative outlet to transpire, he utilize his precise licks and chops as tools to delight into the psych harmonies and lo-fi styling he has adopted , making is rare to hear a sour note in their music.
I’ve been centred on their albums, either with Tentakills , with his Jazz-Pill or solo., from archive.org and bandcamp. I’ve been centred on these albums for a good reason, to realizing I about my need about post all this for you , so I’m gonna suggest you’re a madman if you don’t snatch up these efforts right away. The albums are fantastically charming, sounds both classic and modern by combining garage rock and psych and older styles of rock or Blues, naturally with all the jangled, distorted guitar´s Al excels.
There, is almost impossible to pin if truly wearing a main influence on his sleeve ,it’s quite obvious that he is into “doing their own thing”. I can tag it under different shapes, but the only way to really grasp what he was reaching for,is to listen to their music first hand. It is done well and can’t beat the price (free, naturally).
This man is a true wizard of lo-fi garage psych rock …

The first ever YPT compilation. It all started here. Al Hotchkiss championing the beginning and end, wonderful psych and prog and everything else in between. It was here I discovered To Get Her Together and Enormous. It was here I learned what to look out for. It was only the beginning, but I will always be proud of it.
A brilliant follow-up to Volume 1, We Sell Soul was something I put my heart and soul into. Olde Men On Acid, The Magnificent Brotherhood, The Shivas, and the Luck of Eden Hall amongst others who to this day continue to make amazing music.

Does it get any better than an Emptifish track kicking it all off and a Bibles of Twang track to see us out? I think not. This is a brilliant volume full of power and with a bit more garage than usual. Every YPT comp has it’s own personality and this one has a wonderful flowery bite to it. Sink your teeth in.

Where YPT Vol. 3 might have left a garage aftertaste in your ears, Vol. 4 will take you to the darker side of things. Not a trip for the lighthearted, this compilation ends up where it begins — nowhere in particular. Os Haxixins, Acid Fascists, The Pale Blue Eyes, The Shivas, Bibles of Twang, Magnificent Brotherhood and my own project Sugar Skulls all grace this heavy number.

This volume was very special. It included tracks from YPT favourites like To Get Her Together, The Jesus Loves Heroin Band, and Al Hotchkiss, as well as first timers Man On the Moon, the Garage Gods, and Mike Brown. Most amazingly, however, I was honoured to be able to put an ELECTRIC PRUNES track on this. They were very gracious and I will never be thankful enough.

A wonderful volume full of YPT bands familiar and unfamiliar. A trip down memory lane where none of the memories are yours but all of them are pleasant. Sit back and spin.

There was a long stretch between YPT 6 and YPT 7, but I’m proud to say I thought the gap wasn’t noticeable. Once again a return to the darker side of psych for a lot of these tracks, there was also a hint of optimism. Devour over and over again for best results.
