As i sit here writing, I´m enjoying the new LP by Thee Oh Sees, Putrifiers II which is due out on Sept. 11 and maybe one of the best work the band has created invoking an overall vibe of true rock and roll utterly soaked in sweetness distortioned and sweaty yelps of it all, and which I hope to get my hands on the proper album on next month, or time whatever it takes to get to Argentina, my country, here’s a complete and chronological caravan through the musical creativity and chaos of John Dwyer, intertwined with a back to front blast ,through the discography of his prized and prolific project Thee Oh sees, which keeps him very busy since almost a decade, when started playing dreamy psych-folk as OCS on 2004, what was originally an outlet for his own experimental, instrumental home-recordings and to morphed it now into a full-on four piece, featuring Brigid Dawson , Petey Dammit and Mike Shoun , a so cohesive group with whom seems to have found a comfortable niche to thrive.
Since relocating to San Francisco from Providence in 1997, Dwyer has been a mainstay in the Bay Area´s underground with a variety of demented rowdy earlier incarnations like Coachwhips, Pink and Brown, Landed, Yikes, Burmese, The Hospitals, Zeigenbock Kopf, or Dig That Body Up It’s Alive.
Regarding Thee Oh Sees music, it can found floating in the web around of Garage Punk, Garage Rock, Experimental, Psychedelic. Whatever label will works for you, can will see how they draw from all of these genres to have a sound that is uniquely their own that they come in a different form with each release , which usually landing with their juggling rowdy somewhere refreshing and sometimes nostalgic between the 60s/70s.
So, if you’ve never heard of this band before, please listen to them , or If you’ve got every other record John Dwyer ever made, I think surely it’s one of your faves and If you’re not convinced yet, then you can choose some from below and just hit “play,” .
There are many reasons to love John Dwyer. Thee Oh Sees is one.
