– All Formats Featuring Previously Unreleased Songs –
Following the 20th anniversary release last year of Bona Drag, EMI are pleased to announce, with Morrissey’s full co-operation, the release through the Major Minor label of The Very Best Of, and limited edition ‘Glamorous Glue’ seven inches and an ECD featuring two never-heard-before B-sides.
The Very Best Of Morrissey is an 18-song compilation, encompassing a diverse selection of material from Morrissey’s HMV and Parlophone albums, ranging from his early run of successful singles, through selected album tracks – ‘Glamorous Glue’, ‘Break Up The Family’ – to B-sides, such as November Spawned A Monster’s ‘Girl Least Likely To’. Additionally, it also includes the US mix of ‘Tomorrow’ and US single version of ‘My Love Life’, his sublime, extended (9:39 minutes) interpretation of Johnny Mercer and Henry Mancini’s ‘Moonriver’, and a never-heard-before solo version of ‘Interlude’ (originally released as a duet with Siouxsie Sioux).
The bonus DVD featured 11 promo videos, three of which – ‘Boxers’, ‘The More You Ignore Me…’, and ‘Sunny’ – are previously unavailable on DVD outside of the US, and the rarely seen, mesmerising live performance of ‘I’ve Changed My Plea To Guilty’ from the Jonathan Ross Show.
The week before the album’s release, a limited edition 7″ in a picture sleeve, a limited edition 7″ picture disc, and an ECD single of ‘Glamorous Glue’ was released, both b/w two never-heard-before Morrissey songs – ‘Safe, Warm Lancashire Home’ (7 inches) and ‘Treat Me Like A Human Being’ (ECD) – taken from the Viva Hate album sessions.
Directing the artwork for the album and single, Morrissey has chosen a selection of very rare – in some instances, previously unseen – stunning photos from Jake Walters, Kevin Cummins, Linder Sterling, Perou and Renaud Monfourny to adorn the sleeves, booklet and poster bag.
The album is available on CD and vinyl. The LP version is a double, heavyweight 180g vinyl, housed in a wide-spine sleeve with a pull-out poster. The CD is housed in a gatefold, card sleeve.
The first seven inch single is come in a double-sided picture sleeve with the orange Major Minor labels on the disc. The picture disc is clear plastic with a photo each side..
Below you can download the 18 tracks of The Very Best CD and 2 tracks of Glamorous Glue single ….
A Few Words From Rich Turiel: (Guided By Voices/Robert Pollard right-hand man/tour manager) “I’m Burt Bacharach in reverse”
Robert Pollard uttered these words on The Electrifying Conclusion Tour back in 2004. He was referring to the amount of “hits” he has written with hardly anyone noticing. Over the years I’ve seen lots of “famous” musicians come back stage and pay homage to Bob. I always wondered why there wasn’t a massive Guided By Voices tribute album featuring REM, U2, Tom Petty, Cheap Trick (all bands who have had members who have praised Bob’s music). But I realize that maybe I was looking at this all wrong. It wasn’t the already famous that mattered, it was the number of young musicians that Bob was influencing that were more important. These were people that mattered. The ones who saw GBV play in the small clubs, the ones that played WITH GBV in the small clubs. They were the rock and roll warriors that share Bob’s rock and roll ethos. They are the spirit of GBV. Why you ask?
Guided by Voices are a truly influential band in the indie music sphere. Their 20+ year run provided the sonic groundwork for the lo-fi, DIY aesthetic so prevalent in today’s indie music scene. So it comes as no surprise that so many artists would be willing to provide covers from all eras of Guided by Voices work for the tribute album, Sing For Your Meat. Ranging from veterans such as The Flaming Lips, Thurston Moore (of Sonic Youth fame), and Lou Barlow, to artists more recently making names for themselves like La Sera and Blitzen Trapper, the bands on this 23-track tribute pay loving homage to a band without whom they might not exist. This album is a celebration of the many faces of Guided By Voices and the multitude of artists that they have influenced through both their music and mentality. Through a broad array of recording techniques and musical genres the artists have shown us all just how deeply they have been inspired and engaged by the works of GBV. Both contemporaries and current indie up-and-coming artists alike have contributed to what we feel is an authentically GBV’esque album. Some leaning heavily toward the lo-fi aesthetic while others mirrored the more produced side of the vast catalog, these fans-at-heart have created an album full of depth and raw character.
Tidbits about recording techniques:
Some of the tracks were literally recorded in bedrooms.
Western Civ’s tracks were recorded in their practice space (at Rich’s house) with a guy they had never met before and his portable recording rig. (Todd Fitch)
Lou Barlow recorded his track 12 times on a walkman like thing and then stacked them all. How cool is that? He gets my personal thumbs up for coolest technique!
Kelley Deal and The Buffalo Killers had never played their song together before they arrived at Candyland to record it it! (Talk about insta-chemistry!)
The world found out we were making this tribute when Wayne Cohen tweeted himself recording the vocals for The Flaming Lips track.
La Sera’s track was done entirely by two people. Katy Goodman (vocals) and Brady Hall (instrumentation)
Both the Thurston Moore track and the James Husband track had been previously released on other projects. Thurston’s track was under the name Male Slut on the first GBV tribute, “Blatant Doom Trip” which was done by the infamous Trader Vic.
Mass Solo Revolt’s track was all played and recorded by one guy, Martin Brummeler.
Superdrag’s track is from the web! A friend of theirs (Dewey Cole) had recorded a live show. John Davies grabbed the track from the web in MP3 form and we sent it straight to the mastering engineer as is.
Which brings me to Dave. Many thanks to our mastering engineer, Dave Harris of Studio B in Charlotte. He deserves multiple pats on the back for making all of this sound somewhat cohesive while still keeping the raw GBV feel. You sir have super human ears, and we think you rock.

The Black Angels, who hail from Austin, Texas, have found a second home in New York City, where fans sold out both the Bowery Ballroom in Manhattan and The Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn for two triumphant headlining Angels shows last weekend of april 8.
The band’s popularity, which has taken another leap with last year’s stellar release, The Phosphene Dream, only is boosted by its current live show, which has become edgier and more intensely psychedelic. Drawing on the darker side of 1960s acid-rock, most notably its Texas forerunners The 13th Floor Elevators, and also acts like The Doors, Love, and even those surly New Yorkers The Velvet Underground (from whose “Black Angel’s Death Song” the band took its name), The Black Angels live are about creating an atmosphere that is simultaneously mind-expanding and darkly unsettling. For the band, the future appears to be very bright-in a darkly trippy, 1960s kind of way, of course…
You can download his live performance below….
The Black Angels – Live At Bowery Ballroom, New York, NY
Between May and October 1969, the Velvet Underground (Lou Reed, Sterling Morrison, Moe Tucker and Doug Yule) recorded fourteen songs at the Record Plant in New York City for what would have been the band’s fourth album for MGM/Verve Records. But when the Velvets left the label soon after, the recordings were shelved, and would not be heard by the public for a decade and a half. These songs, from those long-lost sessions, capture the Velvet Underground at a fascinating transitional point between the understated intimacy of their self-titled third album and the focused melodic rock of their next release, Loaded. Buy and Hear them in glorious mono!!!
Bass, Backing Vocals – Doug Yule
Guitar, Backing Vocals – Sterling Morrison
Percussion – Maureen Tucker
Vocals, Guitar – Lou Reed

PJ Harvey took the stage at San Francisco’s Warfield Theater on April 14 wearing a neo-Victorian white gown, leather platform boots and a winged, feathered headpiece. Clutching an autoharp to her chest, she launched into “Let England Shake,” the title track from her new album, to the delight of nearly 3,000 fans. Upon hearing that mighty opening line — “The West’s asleep” — the audience stood, roared and swayed.
Even if you haven’t heard Harvey’s music, you’ve likely heard of her. The daughter of sheep farmers from southwest England, Harvey has been making music steadily since the early 1990s: 10 albums that range from punk blues to electronica. Though Harvey is known for songs about blunt, unapologetic desire, her latest album, Let England Shake, is more topical: a reaction to the pervasiveness of violence and the impact of conflict and war. While Harvey has never shied away from disturbing material, Let England Shake is her most political work to date.
On stage at the Warfield, with accompaniment that included her regular collaborators Mick Harvey and John Parish, the 41-year-old Harvey — with her jet-black hair and tiny frame — continues to look the part. Not too many rockers can sing about deformed children or soldiers falling “like lumps of meat” without sounding heavy-handed, but Harvey pulls it off. She departed from the powerful, gravelly voice for which she’s known, instead singing at a higher pitch in a more tender, folk-based style. Although at times it was difficult to hear her voice over the accompaniment (a rarity for a PJ Harvey performance), the effect was curious and satisfying.
While Harvey played some crowd favorites (“Down by the Water” and “C’mon Billy” among them), she stuck largely to new material, playing every track on Let England Shake. The majority of the audience seemed to know every word.
Her encore consisted of several poignantly placed songs. The first was “Big Exit,” in which she sang, “I just feel like it’s the end of the world.” And she closed with “Silence,” which includes the lines, “I freed myself! I freed myself!” Along with 3,000 other people in the room, both messages rang true.
