MARCH 1967: THE VELVET UNDERGOUND RELEASE THEIR FIRST ALBUM.
Andy Warhol was credited as “producer” on The Velvet Underground and Nico album. The album’s release had been delayed because a special machine had to be made to manufacture the original cover, designed by Warhol, of a banana that could be peeled. (UT105)
Newspapers and magazines refused to take ads for for the album because of the controversial nature of the songs dealing with drugs and sadomasochism – apart from Grove Press’ alternative publication, the Evergreen Review. The majority of radio stations refused to play it.
ERIC EMERSON sued MGM for putting his picture on the back cover without a release. MGM withdrew the album for six weeks while they airbrushed Eric’s face off the cover.
LOU REED decided not to play again in New York because of the reaction to the album. He did not play New York again until 1970
I know I won’t be the only one excited by this. It has been great to see over the past days a huge amount being written about the recently reissued and honored The Velvet nderground and Nco , is like if march 1967 was an excellent month which produced probably the surprise of that year , when really the hippie world of 1967 was not ready for the Velvets yet, they was at a disadvantage.without the intriguing visual montage of the live show (and the decibels from other bands , they was placed in a studio just making music. with a noisy sound ,varied stylistically with which they seemed say that invent isn’t to be underrated
I’m not going to bore you with how stupendously influential this album is now or start to throw data to you:, only I hope if you’re among the minority who is likely hasn’t picked up yet this kind of music , will ask yourself how you ever got along without it when finally you´ll listen it…
